GE Multlin SPM Application to Prevent Power Factor Trip during Voltage Dip

I have a 2500 Hp; 4000 Volts; 240 RPM; 0.87 P.F. synchronous motor with GEMultlin 269+ & SPM protection that trips on Power Factor Fault from the SPM when another motor (induction motor) load is applied. The induction motor is connected to the load through an air clutch and once engaged, the voltage dips enough to cause the trip. The synchronous motor load has to operate before the induction motor load since the synchronous motor is downstream from the induction motor for product flow.

The SPM provides excitation control to maintain a leading power factor. The exciter is a solid state device (all GE controls circa 1995, except for the SPM, which was added to replace the original microSPM). The SPM is set for ridethrough.

Is there a way to provide a temporary input to the SPM to reduce field excitation and potentially reduce the power factor swing during the Voltage dip at start up of the other motor? I hesitate to increase P.F. Trip Delay to reduce the chance of torque pulsations.

I have detail information on the synchronous machine and factory setpoints for the relays.

IGI Consulting Announces New Report - "Is Google Going to Capture Telephony?"

"Telecom Business Transformation" is a big topic worldwide in these turbulent economic times. Many carriers and manufacturers are in the process of transformation projects. One of the outcomes of such projects must be a vision or plan for that company’s next-generation network. Information Gatekeepers Inc. (IGI) is starting a series of reports on Telecom Business Transformation that will consider ma… Continue

NOTES - Photo Importing Instructions

This pertains to your personal photo, Group photos and Events photos.

The photo image will be compressed so that the smallest dimension is sized to 171 pixels and then the larger dimension will be cropped to the center of the photo. For your pictures to show up as you'd like, you'll need to make sure that the center of the photo is what you want to see, or add white space to the sides of your photos to make them square so when they are resized they will fit.

Please use a photo editing program to add white-space so that the photos are square and then import them, while also checking that the overall height or width is 171 pixels or less.

If you don't have a photo editing program, let us know and we'll see if we can get the photos resized for you.

Pocket Protectors

Did you know that pocket protectors were invented by Electrical Engineer, Hurley Smith, in 1943?
